Good stuff. I love your focus on free tools. I am all about free as well.

Besides the # of competing pages and their page rank I also look at the number of links the top few sights have and the quality of those sites. I use some free tools to speed this up.

Traffic Travis – a quick way to get an overview of how easy it will be to get a page one ranking for a keyword. It shows the PR, domain age, backlinks, whether the keyword is in the title, description and H1 tag, and more all in agrid format for easy comparison. They also use a star rating system which provides a quick glance at the competitiveness.

Market Samurai – you can a free trial of the full version but the keyword research module is free. It is great for keyword research and lets you compare the traffic and competition in a grid.

SEO SpyGlass (linkassistant.com) is free and will list data for a website’s backlinks including PR, # of outbound links and most importantly the anchor text. You can sort the data to see how many links the site has with the keyword in the anchor text. Don’t let a lot of backlinks intimidate you if they are just the URL as the anchor text (unless the URL has the keyword in it).

Too many more great free tools to list here.

      Hi,

I also look at the amount of links the top pages have, and if they are under 100 I’ll go for it.
I use DSS as well, but usually link those back to one site, usually docstoc so that gets a higher ranking, generally p1 on google.
If I do an article I will link back to that from a few other sites too so that gets a high profile too.
      Then ping and feed rss.
This usually gets me 3 or 4 placings on page 1..

Yep, this is part of my next video-pinging, rss feeds, and building links to your articles and site. Works like a charm if done right. Great comment, thanks
